A Cable Arm Finisher and a Single Cable Arm Row: What My Cost Spreadsheet Missed

In October 2024 I walked into Service Bay 2 and found a charging cable that looked more like a woolly bear than a cable. Frayed, fuzzy and dark with road grime, it hung from a broken hook with its connector shroud cracked in two places. Robert, our maintenance supervisor, stood next to it holding the other end. It is the part that a driver sees last, and it is usually the part that fails first when the radius is too tight or the cable is not secured correctly. I do not mean every finisher is essential. I mean the cheapest finisher is not automatically the same function as the one engineered for a heavier cable.
Why a Single Cable Arm Row Got Onto My Spreadsheet
After Robert showed me the damaged cable, I asked two suppliers for quotes. One offered a single cable arm row: a straight line of arms above the charging bays, one arm per bay, with each cable staying in its own lane. The other offered a similar-looking system with a lower price and a quicker delivery date.
I went back and forth between the two options for two weeks. On paper, the cheaper option made sense. It saved 31 percent, and the technical drawings looked almost identical. My gut said to run a small test first. I approved a three-bay test from the lower-cost vendor. That decision is still the part of this story I do not defend.
The test passed the first two weeks. Then the temperature dropped below freezing. The cable pulled at an angle that the cheaper finisher did not accept; its connector boot slipped off, and the arm swung into the bay. Nobody was hurt, but the charger was down for two days.
The Total Cost Lesson Did Not Show Up Until March
When I rebuilt my cost worksheet, the 31 percent savings disappeared. The discounted quote did not include the extra alignment brackets. It did not include the labor to replace the test section. It did not include the cost of moving vehicles to other depots while the bay was down. In our case, the lower-priced option was about $1,900 more expensive over the first year.

It proves that the component which touches the cable day and night deserves the same level of review as the charger itself.
When a Single Cable Arm Row Is Not the Right Answer
I would not recommend a single cable arm row for every site. If charging bays are not clearly marked, or if your fleet uses different cable lengths, a shared overhead rail may be a better fit. If you have older chargers with fixed wall outlets rather than columns, measure the drop distance before buying. A solution that works for 80 percent of our depot may not work for a public site with random parking. That is okay. The goal is not to buy the most advanced system. The goal is to avoid buying the same replacement cable again.
A few months earlier, I thought cable management was just a way to make a charging area look neat. Now I know it is a reliability decision with a line item in my budget. Check the mounting patterns, cable diameter ranges and labels on every component. Ask the supplier which finisher is rated for your cable. Then ask what happens when that part fails. If they cannot answer, the total cost is still unknown.
