If your workplace is installing EV charging and someone handed you the cable management side of the purchase, you will eventually land on what most catalogs call a cable arm—sometimes written as cable-arm in spec sheets. A cable arm keeps the charging connector off the pavement, reduces tripping hazards, and protects the cable from getting run over. This article is a buyer's checklist, not an engineering guide. I am the office administrator for a 260-person industrial maintenance company. I manage facility purchasing, roughly $700,000 per year across eight vendors, and I coordinated the procurement side of our EV charging rollout in early 2024: 24 bays, 14 fleet vehicles, and a single row of charging pedestals. The cable arm portion of that project was more detailed than it looked. Here is the checklist I would follow if I had to do it again.

What a single cable arm row actually means

A "single cable arm row" is a layout where each charging bay gets one cable arm, mounted on or beside the charger. It is usually the most cost-effective option for a workplace lot because each arm only has to reach one parking space. But that one-to-one fit also means planning mistakes repeat across every bay. If an arm is too short, or on the wrong side, or missing a component, you do not have one problem—you have twenty. The checks below are the ones I now run before I put a PO together. They are in order.

The 7-point cable arm row checklist

1. Measure the real site, not the floor plan

Start with measurements, not brochures. In our 2024 project, the original site drawing showed even bay spacing. The real car park had light poles, drainage grates, and a fire lane that made two of the bays narrower than the rest. If you spec the row from a floor plan, you can end up with an arm that reaches perfectly for 22 bays and misses the 23rd and 24th.

For every bay in the row, write down the actual figures: bay width and depth, charger pedestal position, distance to bollards or kerbs, mounting surface height, and the clearance area around the arm's swing. You do not need to become a surveyor. You need enough ground truth to check the supplier's dimensional drawing against reality.

2. Map charge-port locations on the vehicles that will actually use the lot

This is the step I see most procurement teams skip. They choose cable arms based on the charger brand or the arm's appearance in a marketing photo. But the vehicle side matters just as much. Charge ports sit in different places: front, rear, driver side, passenger side. They also sit at different heights, which affects the reach and the spring tension you need.

Our fleet at the time was mostly sedans with the port on the driver's side rear, plus one electric van with the port on the passenger side front and two trucks with fender-mounted ports. If we had positioned the row only for the sedans, drivers of the van and trucks would have had to drag the cable across the vehicle body or park in the wrong orientation. Do a quick internal survey of the actual vehicles that will charge there—not the mix you hope to have in three years. Then, when you talk to a cable arm supplier, give them that mix. The good ones will ask about it. If they don't, that's a signal.

3. Match the arm to the charger with drawings, not with a "compatible" label

Many suppliers will say their cable arms work with a broad range of charging pedestals. That may be true, but "broad compatibility" is not a spec. Ask for a dimensional drawing of the mounting interface and overlay it against your pedestal's drill pattern and cable exit point.

You also need to match the arm to the cable itself. Check the cable's length, thickness, and weight, plus the weight of the connector at the end. The spring in the arm needs to suit that combined weight. Too little tension and the cable sags onto the pavement. Too much tension and the arm yanks the handle out of a driver's hand while they are trying to plug in. I'm not an engineer, and I do not need to be one to ask the question: "What cable weight range is this arm rated for, and how do I adjust it?"

4. Put every component in writing

A cable arm row is rarely one SKU per bay. The assembly usually includes the arm body, a reach extension for wider bays, a cable bucket or cradle, finishers or end covers, plus mounting plates and fasteners. If suppliers sell kits, ask for the kit breakdown in writing.

In my first major cable arm purchase, I made the classic specification error: I approved a quote for a "complete single cable arm row" without asking what was inside that phrase. Turns out the supplier's definition of "complete" did not include mounting plates. We were using the same words but meaning different things, and we discovered it when the first pallet arrived. The redo cost roughly $600 in unplanned parts and added six weeks to the schedule.

Now I write PO line items like this: "complete arm assembly per attached drawing—arm body, extension, cable bucket, finishers, mounting plate, and fasteners." If a vendor will not put that level of detail into the quote, I move on.

5. Ask "what's not included?" before you ask the price

I've learned to ask what is NOT included before I ask what the price is. A cable arm row quote can look clean on page one and hide the real cost in page three.

In one comparison for our 2024 rollout, the spreadsheet said Vendor B was about 15% cheaper than our regular supplier. My gut said to call Vendor B and ask whether their quote included a site survey and dimensional drawings. It did not. After we added the survey, drawing review, mounting plates, and freight, the gap nearly disappeared. The vendor who lists everything upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. It is also easier to budget, which matters when finance is watching.

Watch for these line items on any cable arm quote:

  • Mounting plates, bolts, and anchor kits
  • Reach extensions if any of your vehicles need them
  • Freight, liftgate delivery, and staging
  • Installation drawings and assembly documentation
  • Spare cable buckets, finishers, or adjustment parts

6. Ask for adjustment and maintenance documentation before signing

A cable arm is a moving assembly. It has springs, joints, and fasteners that will need attention after months of use. If you are the buyer, you don't need to install it yourself, but the quote should include the documents a qualified installer will need: torque values for the mounting bolts, spring adjustment range, and a parts list with names that match the drawings.

The most frustrating part of this process for me was how inconsistent the terminology is across suppliers. One vendor calls the part a "cable bucket," another calls it a "cradle," and a third calls it a "connector seat." You'd think after years of EV infrastructure growth, spec sheets would use the same language. They do not. Ask for spare parts using their own drawing numbers, not descriptions, so the part that arrives is the part you actually need.

7. Pilot one bay before you buy the full row

If the budget allows, buy one complete assembly first. Install it on the most difficult bay in the row—the one with the largest vehicle, the tightest clearance, or the odd port position. Test it with the real vehicles that will use it.

This sounds obvious, but it is the step that gets cut when a project is behind schedule. During our rollout, the pilot caught two issues: the spring needed a higher tension setting for the heavier charging cable than the standard configuration shipped with, and one arm's swing clearance was tighter than the drawing suggested because of a nearby light pole. Both were easy fixes before the full order went in. They would have been expensive fixes after 24 assemblies were on the wall.

The bottom line

Ordering a single cable arm row is a procurement job, not a guessing game. Measure the real site, map the real vehicles, match the arm to the actual charger, and put the component list in writing. Then ask what is not included in the quote before you compare prices. The cheapest quote is not necessarily the most expensive mistake, but it is often in the running.

One last piece of advice, take it with a grain of salt because every site is different: if a supplier hesitates to provide a dimensional drawing, a component breakdown, or a pilot unit, that hesitation tells you more than any spec sheet. In my experience, the supplier who is transparent about what they include—and what they don't—is the one whose row you want in front of your employees every day.
