Cable Arm Raise: Stop Treating It Like an Accessory Purchase

Here's my opinion: a cable arm raise is not an accessory decision. It's an infrastructure decision. If you're only looking at the arm itself, you're missing the whole canvas—the charger layout, the cable path, the mounting surface, and the people who'll actually use it.
I'm the administrator who buys this stuff for a mid-sized fleet maintenance company. I don't engineer the systems, but I approve the purchase orders. And since taking over purchasing in 2020, I've learned that compatible with is the most dangerous phrase in industrial parts ordering.
Why the cable arm raise matters more than it used to
Charging stations are getting busier. More vehicles, more connector types, more people pulling on cables. The cable arm raise used to be a nice-to-have. Now it's part of the daily workflow. If the arm doesn't hold the cable at the correct height, drivers will drop it, drag it, or wrap it around the charger.
A Kempower cable arm request is a good example. It sounds specific. But what exactly are you asking for? The original arm from the charger OEM? A compatible aftermarket replacement? An extension that installs between the charger and the existing arm? I've had to ask that question on more than one order.
The divide that actually matters
The biggest divide I see in purchasing requests isn't between brands. It's between buyers who plan for the whole installation and buyers who just want to check a box. Adding cable arm raise to a work order doesn't tell you which hardware will fit, how much clearance you need, or whether the mount can tolerate torque from sideways pulls.
That divide gets obvious when someone treats the choice like a styling exercise. But specifying cable management isn't like picking costume ideas for 3 best friends. You don't need matching aesthetics; you need each arm to fit its own physical position. If the theme is everybody gets a cable arm, but the brackets don't line up with the charger's mounting holes, the project stops.
What I check before approving a cable-arm order
I'm not an electrical engineer, so I can't speak to load calculations or electrical ratings. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is that you need to verify these before spending money:
- Mounting hole pattern and charger generation. Fits Kempower is not a spec.
- Cable bend radius and connector weight. The arm needs to manage the actual cable, not an idealized version.
- Reach range. A cable arm raise should reduce strain, not create a tug-of-war.
- Spare parts availability. Can you buy replacement springs, pins, or brackets later?
This is also where the site canvas matters. A cable arm that works next to a wall may not work on an island charger with vehicles approaching from both sides. The same part can be perfect in one bay and a problem in another.
The gotcha that changed my process
In 2024, we were ready to order a full set of aftermarket cable arms for our Kempower chargers. The spec sheet said they were compatible with multiple charger models. The price was good. The photos looked right.
The numbers said it was fine. My gut said to order one first. I went with my gut. Good thing.
When the sample arrived, the mounting bracket didn't align with the charger. The pitch was close, but the slot spacing was off by several millimeters. We could have made it work with a drill and a file, but that's not how I want to treat brand-new equipment. The supplier's definition of compatible was broader than our definition of bolt-on.
The most frustrating part is that there's no standard naming convention for these components. Charger OEMs, cable management brands, and third-party parts suppliers all use cable arm to mean slightly different things. You'd think a term like that would be regulated. According to IEC 62196, connector configurations are standardized, but cable arms aren't. That means the responsibility falls on the buyer.
Looking back, I should have requested the mounting drawing before we ordered. At the time, the product photos seemed like enough. They weren't. Now I ask every vendor for a dimensioned drawing or a 3D step file before I'll issue a PO.
My bottom line
I think a cable arm raise deserves the same planning as any other piece of mechanical infrastructure. It's not about what looks good in a brochure. It's about what will work for your drivers, your equipment, and your maintenance team over the lifetime of the site.
This approach works for us because we're a mid-sized operation with predictable charging demand. If you're running a single charger or a temporary setup, you might not need that level of review. Your mileage may vary, and that's okay. The point is to make the decision intentionally, not by default.
I'd rather spend 15 minutes explaining mounting patterns and cable weights than deal with a failed installation and a return shipping bill. An informed buyer is a faster buyer. That's true whether you're buying cable-arm components, planning a site layout, or just starting to explore charging infrastructure options. Trust me on this one.
